Brazil

In Brazil, sugar cane is one of the largest agricultural products by volume and dollars produced in Brazil. Today, Brazil is the world's largest sugar producer and exporter, accounting for approximately 20% of total global production and more than 40% of world exports. Sugar cane grows well in Brazil due to Brazil's large landmass and geographic position near the equator and tropical environs. Approximately 60 - 70% of Brazil's sugar is exported each year. It was the Portuguese who introduced sugar cane to Brazil around five centuries ago. Sugar cane can be used to make not only sugar, but also alcohol, which was the primary driver for sugar production in Brazil since the 1970's. As sugar cane can be made into alcohol-based fuel, it was the government of Brazil's program ProAlcool that drove these massive increases in cane production. Today, sugar cane accounts for about 80% of sugar produced worldwide.

Popular Products: Raw & Refined Cane Sugar, ICUMSA 45, ICUMSA 100, ICUMSA 600 - 1200.
Packing: Sugar is typically packed in 50 kg bags then shipped in 20' FCLs or Bulk Loaded in vessels with a minimum 12,500 MT order, up to 300,000 MT per month sent via 50,000 MT vessels.

Thailand

In Thailand, Sugar Cane is one of the largest agricultural products. Sugar cane originated in South-East Asia and is actually a grass. The cane's fibrous stalks are rich in the sugar sucrose, which is crushed out of the cane and once the water content is evaporated out, becomes the raw sugar most consumers are used to. Thailand is the world's second largest sugar exporter, after Brazil. Since 2010 the government of Thailand has worked to transition rice farms to sugar farms in order to increase production. This has not been without controversy due to sugar cane's use of the herbicide Paraquat, which is toxic to humans and animals. Despite this, the ready global market for sugar and falling prices for rice has made this transition irresistable.

European Union

In the Europpean Union (EU), Beet Sugar is the primary raw source for EU sugar production. The EU is the world's leading producer of beet sugar, with around 50% of the total global production for sugar beets. Beet sugar however, represenets approximately 20% of total global sugar production. This sugar is derived from the sugar beet, a plant whose root contains a high concentration of sucrose. Since sugar beets require much milder temperatures than cane sugar, the large tracts of land throughout Europe are ideal for growing this vegetable. Sugar beets are at their most excellent for quality and and high sucrose content in geographies with high day-time temperatures and cooler nights. In order to make EU beet sugar more competetive on a global scale, the EU ended its quota system on September 30, 2017.
